New preliminary results from the Apple Women′s Health Study were made public by Apple, underscoring the significance of observing menstrual cycles and their bearing on general health.

This ground-breaking study, which was carried out in collaboration with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), aimed to advance knowledge of menstrual cycles and their connections to a variety of health issues, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), infertility, and menopause transition.

The research team discovered that 12% of individuals reported having been diagnosed with PCOS. According to Apple, participants with PCOS had a risk of uterine cancer that was more than 2.5 times higher and a risk of endometrial hyperplasia, a precursor to uterine cancer, that was more than four times higher.

In addition, 5.7% of participants stated that it took them five or more years following their first period for their cycles to become regular. According to the results, participants in that group had a higher risk of uterine cancer and endometrial hyperplasia than those who said it took less than a year for their cycles to become regular.

Dr. Shruthi Mahalingaiah, MS, assistant professor of environmental reproductive and women′s health at Harvard Chan School and co-principal investigator of the Apple Women′s Health Study, stated that more knowledge on menstrual cycle physiology and the impact of irregular periods and PCOS on uterine health is needed.
